The response to the new Squirts Program for 3 to 5 year olds has overwhelming. Registered numbers have exceeded expectations as the level of interest in the program has been incredible. Children are required to wear appropriate clothing and footwear (joggers) and hat (soft brim hats preferred as peaked caps can caused facial injuries to other children). Shin pads and boots not required. Bring drink bottle and lite snacks. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the activities with the children.
SQUIRTS OVERVIEW
Football Queensland is pleased to be able to provide the Football Squirts program. This is the only recognised and endorsed program for children under the age of five and therefore participants and clubs will be covered by the state insurance program.
What is the Squirts program?
The Football Squirts program has been created to develop the football skills of 3 to 5 year olds. The program will enhance the opportunities for young children to receive quality, consistent coaching. The hope is that in acquiring basic skills, participating children will not only learn correct technique but will also develop a love of the “world game”.
The Football Squirts program promotes football-based exercise and activity for younger children who are not able to be registered to play. It can be used as a stand-alone program at specific times during the week or as a way of involving younger family members on weekends while their older brothers and sisters play scheduled matches
The program is not a “technical coaching” program, but a tempered introduction to the great sport of football. The very basics of the game are introduced and experienced by the participants through different drills, practices and games.
The program consists of 50 actitivies.
The football itself is the Coach’s main tool and this ought to be utilised as much as possible. Elite players are not the ultimate outcome we are seeking, rather the development of the individual participant’s gross motor skills in conjunction with them becoming physically active. Running, stopping, ball control, jumping, turning, balance, agility, movement and general co-ordination are all skills to be acquired and improve. Needless to say, all sessions have to be fun practices. The coach has to be seen as fun, not as the “finger-wagging” teacher or instructor.
What do we teach in Squirts football?
1. Coordination (body)
The very essence of movement should be an integral part of each session. Basic skills such as running, jumping, turning and twisting are to be introduced.
2. Motor Skills Development
With or without a ball, the children are to be challenged in simple gross-motor skill movement.
3. Hand-Eye and Foot-Eye Coordination
This is integral for all sports and ought to be developed whether or not football is ultimately their chosen sport.
4. Introduction to Stretching, Exercise and their Health Benefits
Full body stretches are not advocated, but rather an introduction to such activities to educate the children on the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices.
5. Basic Fundamentals of the Game and its Skills
The skills are introduced in a fun and relaxed manner. By introducing the information in a subtle way, the children are learning the basic fundamentals under the guise of having fun.
6. Balance
This element is important not just for football, but for life in general. One-legged stand has never been so much fun with and without the ball.
7. Games and the Focus of Fun – not Winning
After several weeks of sessions and practice the concept of a game becomes instinctive in the participant’s football development. Simple throw-ins and goal-kicks skills are taught, but they are basically allowed to have fun and permitted to learn through play. Participation and having fun is the key element we are seeking to promote.
8. Sportsmanship
We seek to instill in participants a need to show courtesy to others as they would like to be shown. The program aims to develop good athletes who accept winning and losing in the same spirit and manner. Encouragement of a positive outlook, to always look forward to the next game, is something we hope to instill.
9. Rules and Regulations
We are aiming to give the children very basic rules so they can enjoy the game to a greater level. The concept of tackling and body contact will be addressed and monitored where needed.
10. Respect for Others and their Space
An underlying theme will “Be respectful of all players and officials”. Enjoyment from participating in the game, regardless of the result, is to be fostered.
Session Guidelines

Club Grading Policy
Westside adheres to Football Brisbane policy regarding grading of junior players. Players in under 6, 7, 8, and 9 age groups ARE NOT GRADED. Players are allocated into teams according to available numbers. Players in the under 10 and 11 yrs will be allocated into teams according to the Football Brisbane 'Gecko' - 'Goanna'- 'Komodo Dragon' system. The aim of the club is to create 'like skilled' teams with even numbers and with an even mix of boys and girls. The club will attempt to cater for children who wish to remain in teams with friends / siblings however final numbers will determine team allocation.
All age groups train at the same time so that there is greater communication between coaches and more social interaction between the players. This has been of great benefit for the under 6, 7 and 8 years age groups as the players and coaches have supported each other by combining during training when one coach is unavailable or when small numbers arrive at training. Teams have a greater club focus and are seen as an age group rather than individual teams. Teams also supply players to each other on game day when teams are short.
Grading will apply in competition age groups (under 12 and above) if there are sufficient numbers to form more than one team in each age group. There may be the need to merge age groups if there are limited numbers. Players can only play UP an age group.
Westside FC participates in a local hub competition playing 'home' and 'away' games with other neighbouring clubs.

COACHING SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL (SFF) TEAMS:
Coaches are asked to plan their sessions by preparing a basic session plan. The session should include fun games as a warm-up, stretching and ball mastery (ie juggling). The next part of the session should involve game based exercises that provide related technique and skills practice. Small sided games where players learn decision making skills in real game scenarios should form an important part of any session. The Director of Coaching can assist coaches with ideas as to how to structure session plans. Please do not rely on repetative and boring drills where players are required to line up while waiting for their turn. Each player should have a ball at their feet at all times and all activities should maximise their touches on the ball. Training should be enjoyable, therefor the emphasis should be on small sided games.
SSF rules can be found here . Minimum substitutes are used so that each child has plenty of game time and touches on the ball. There are more opportunities for each player to score. Coaches are not to coach their players to stand in front of the goal as this goes against the spirit of the SSF format. Under 6, 7 and 8 years age groups will play on field 1. Games usually start at 8.30am and are played simultaneously. These age groups play in a local hub competition with Mitchelton Football Club so some games will be played 'away'.
GRASSROOTS COACHING COURSES:
Westside junior coaches have attended a number of FFA Grassroots Coaching Courses that have been held by the club Director of Coaching, Barry McErlean. The course consists of discussion based theory and practical sessions on the pitch. Participants range from experienced coaches right through to first time coaches. It is a great opportunity to share information and for our Westside coaches to come together and get to know each other. Each participant receives a coaching handbook to assist them when planning future training sessions. Everyone engages and actively participates in discussion as well as the practical activities on the pitch. The course is the first step in our aim to create consistency in coaching methods and communication between coaches. All participants receive the Grassroots Coaching Certificate which is the first step in obtaining formal coaching qualifications.

Westside continues to pride iteself on its 'small club' family values, giving personalised attention to every player. Whilst maintaining these values our aim is to expand over the next few years creating development pathways for both social and talented players.
Westside Football Club is a Football (soccer) club located at the Grovely Sports Grounds in Keperra (directly behind Grovely Primary School). We are within the Hills District of North Brisbane surrounded by the suburbs of Grovely, Arana Hills, Keperra, Mitchelton, Ferny Grove and Ferny Hills. We have a proud club history spanning over 45 years. We provide a family atmosphere and our emphasis is on club spirit and partnerships with the community. We strive to create a pathway from juniors through to seniors. We have a very popular Squirts program for children aged 3yrs to 5yrs. We have under 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 yrs teams playing in local hub Small Sided Football (SSF) competitions with neighouring clubs and our older age groups play in the official Football Brisbane competition. Our Mens teams compete in Metro 1, Metro Reserves and Metro 5 and we also have an over two over 35s teams competing in the 'Over 35s Football' North Brisbane Competition. We also have girls teams.
CLUB HISTORY:
Westside was established in 1964 and was first known as 'Budapest Grovely'. The club's colours (red, green and white) are based on the Hungarian national flag.
The club grew from strength to strength and a number of years later officially changed it's name to Westside Sports Club as the emphasis changed from being an ethnic club to a club that provided sporting opportunites for the whole community. The club's main focus is now Football (soccer). At the Annual General Meeting on the 16th November 2009 the club name was changed to Westside Football Club. The club constitution is available here.
